There are officially 57 days until the Sooner football season kicks off and here at Sooner Magic Blog, we are starting a spotlight to go along with the number of days. 57 days means big #57 on the defensive line, a monster from Houston, Du’Vonta Lampkin.
If you haven’t heard the Du’Vonta Lampkin story coming out of high school, its pretty confusing. Basically he signed his LOI to that other university down in Austin, and wasn’t able to get out of it. After awhile, he was finally granted his release and chose Oklahoma.
Coming out of high school, Lampkin was rated a 3-star by Rivals and a 4-star by 247 but was racking up 5-star stats. At 6’4, 342, he is absolutely huge and physically imposes his will on anyone in his path. His senior year of high school he recorded video game numbers with 81 tackles, 38 tackles for loss, and 16 sacks. You can see why Sooner coaches are pretty high on this guy.
Last year, his first year of playing at OU, he was stuck behind Charles Walker for most of the year and Matt Dimon at the beginning of season. In limited time he had 5 tackles, and 2 tackles for loss. With both guys that were ahead of him now gone, it really is his time to shine. With his unique mixture of bulk and build I really expect Lampkin to have a pretty big breakout year. OU will need help on the defensive line and I fully expect it to be partly from Lampkin. If you are looking for a good kid with overflowing talent and endless potential, big #57 is your man.
